Analyzing Disk Space with Disk Usage

Watch tutorial on Disk Usage

Disk Usage visualizes the size of all your files and folders, even the hidden ones, enabling you to detect large items on your hard drive. It scans your folders and marks them with different colors depending on size:

  • Red — >1TB
  • Orange — 1Gb-1TB
  • Yellow — 1Mb-1Gb
  • Green — 1kB-1Mb
  • White — not scanned
  • Gray — scanning...

When you open Disk Usage, it will automatically scan your user folder for all files and folders available. Then it will show you all items as a Column view, with items displayed hierarchically: folders, subfolders, files etc. If an item has a small arrow next to it, this means that you can click it to view its components. Select them using the checkboxes or the Check/Uncheck buttons to select all. To move the found items to Trash, click Remove. To preview the items, use the Quick Look button. To search for a specific item, use the Filter field. To search for items in a specific folder, click the Change Folder button. You can start the scan right after you choose the folder by selecting the Start Scan Immediately checkbox (it is selected by default).

The Start scan immediately option is selected by default, meaning that the scan will start automatically once the folder is changed. The Start scan immediately option is selected by default, meaning that the scan will start automatically once the folder is changed.

You can switch from the Column view to a List view. Here the items will not be expandable – they will be shown as files with full paths, and the color highlights will not be shown as well. Therefore we recommend the Column view, as it clearly shows all folders and files.
